Following the release of the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, which exposes the hip hop artist for his participation in child pornography, imprisonment, and “grooming” minors, people across the globe are participating in the #MuteRKelly movement.
Many people are no longer supporting R. Kelly, and you should not either.
Robert Kelly, better known as R. Kelly, is currently being investigated after many of his victims came forward during the past two years. He has faced charges of sexual harassment, emotional distress, and 21 charges of child pornography. According to BBC News, Kelly was 27 years old, and singer, actress, and model Aaliyah was a 15-year-old child when they were married. Although the marriage was annulled, it was later discovered that Aaliyah had lied about her age on the marriage certificate, claiming she was 18. According to BBC News, Kelly has also had allegations of leading a “cult” where he dictated what the six women being held ate, how they dressed, when they bathed, and when they were allowed to sleep. Kitti Jones, one of the women who were held “claimed the star had starved her… and physically abused her.”
The more you stream Kelly’s songs, the more money he makes. Per 1,000 streams, Spotify pays $7.50, Apple Music pays between $12 and $15, and YouTube pays roughly $1.50. Although that seems like a small amount of money, it adds up whenever your songs are streamed through not only those three music platforms, but also many more like Amazon Music and Pandora. According to Billboard, Kelly’s streams jumped from 1.9 million to 4.3 million on January 5th, two days after Surviving R. Kelly aired. This means that he gets paid roughly $9,006,750 a month from only those three music platforms. Every time you listen to him on any streaming service, he is getting paid.
Despite evidence popping up everywhere, some fans believe that Kelly is innocent. Journalists like Jim DeRogatis have been digging up evidence of the allegations against him for the past two decades. Whenever cornered with the cult allegation, Kelly, once again, denied the story even though there was plenty of evidence to prove him guilty.
Kelly has faced many charges that people have looked over for the past two decades, but this is where people are beginning to draw the line and demand that there be justice.
